The Purple Foot is Milwaukee’s leading home fermentation store, which was started in 1969 by Ken and Clara Geist. The store was opened on 92nd street in December of 1969, and The Purple Foot still calls this place home. In 1972, Mary and Jerry Uthemann began working for Ken and Clara. They took over the operation in 1983 and acquired all rights to the store, and they have been the driving force since then. Over the years, Mary and Jerry’s three children have helped out in the store from time to time. Their daughter Karen came back to work in 2006 after several years of pursuing other interests. She is now ready to take over the store operations.
